Developing Skilled Workers: A Toolkit for Manufacturers on Recruiting and Training a Quality Workforce

Major Findings & Recommendations

Recommendations focus on three key areas: (1) building partnerships (especially with chambers of commerce, the local workforce system, and community and technical colleges); (2) using community/technical colleges to tailor training programs and recruit talent; and (3) building “talent pipelines” through modernized hiring practices (p.4-9). Specific recommendations from key areas include: • Develop community networks for training and certification programs to produce workers with the needed skills. Working with other manufacturers can broaden the network (p.4-5). • “Talk to community colleges and technical schools about upcoming classes and students’ training paths. By volunteering your time to visit the classes, taking on interns, and agreeing to interview students earning certifications, you will have a great chance to build a base of candidates once they finish” (p.6). • Use your human resources department to guide the modernization of “your recruiting and hiring practices [and]…build pathways for incumbent workers” (p.8-9).
